The rebuilt granary at Yonsea Farm
The Trust sees the
preservation of traditional and historic buildings as offering :
- Preservation of the
tangible evidence of events and life in bygone ages for an improved
understanding of history
- Preservation of former
building design and methodologies available for those seeking ideals
in architecture and ecology
- Verification over long
periods of the performance of materials and construction methods
- Experience of
traditional designs to provide the public with a yardstick for
comparison with the architecture in their own lives.
Fundamental to the Trust’s
projects are :
-
Establishment of a modern use for a redundant or derelict building
that does not conflict with the structure
- Favour a
use that maximises public access and includes outcomes that benefit
those with special needs
-
Maintenance of the scale and historical ambience of the building in
all conversion activity
- Avoidance
of architectural additions that compete with the original
- Avoidance
of materials that conflict with the original
-
Observation of the precepts set down by English Heritage and the
Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings
-
Involvement with the community in which the building is found.
The Trust
explores some of these principles in its paper Community Architecture
